#NoEsDeporte The end of rodeo.

Our national movement in Chile to strip rodeo of its sport status. Through social mobilization and policy advocacy, we work so that violence stops being funded with public money.

What it is

A tradition most people no longer applaud.

In Chilean rodeo, two riders on horseback chase a young bull and pin him against a padded wall. It's a spectacle with frightened, injured animals, and in Chile it is classed as a sport, which opens the door to public funding.

#NoEsDeporte works on two fronts: the street, where a social majority is built, and institutions, where that majority becomes decisions.

This is sport, this is not.

In 2025, Animal Libre brought a campaign to public spaces contrasting sports with images of rodeo to challenge its status as a sport. These photographs document the installed advertisements.

Why we do it

Rodeo does not represent Chile.

Since 2022 we have measured, with Criteria, what Chilean society thinks. Three polls later, the answer holds: most people reject rodeo, don't identify with it and don't want to fund it with public money. Politics doesn't yet reflect that majority; that is our job.

Rodeo does not represent Chile.

Since 2022 we have measured, with the polling firm Criteria, what Chilean society thinks of rodeo. Three surveys later, the answer holds: most people reject it, don't identify with it and don't want public money to fund it.

A date we created

National Day against Rodeo.

We established it in 2025: every 7 September, days before Chile's national holidays, the country raises its voice for those who cannot defend themselves. Street actions, talks, digital campaigns and events nationwide.

Car stickers: the message travels.

We took the anti-rodeo campaign onto the cars of people who want to say it on every trip: in the city, on the highway and in rodeo arena car parks.

Criteria surveys for Animal Libre, online panel of adults across Chile. 2022: 1,000 cases, 26–30 August. 2023: August. 2026: 825 cases, 22–23 April, weighted by region, sex, age and socioeconomic level. “Other answers” groups neutral and no response. The question on national sport by law was first asked in 2023.

How it works

This is how we do it.

  1. 01

    Measure

Regular polls that show what citizens think.

  2. 02

    Mobilize

Petitions, street actions and car stickers that carry the message on every trip.

  3. 03

    Set a date

Every September 7, days before the national holidays, Chile speaks up.

  4. 04

    Advocate

Bring the evidence to authorities and lawmakers.

Its value

The change we seek, and who it serves.

i.

For the animals

Young bulls and horses stop being used as a spectacle paid for by everyone.

ii.

For people

A tradition reviewed with data and respect, by showing what most people already think.

iii.

For the movement

A model of campaigning based on public-opinion evidence, replicable on other issues.
